Choosing letter size

Letters about 8 inches tall are readable from across a classroom and suit main bulletin board titles such as “WELCOME BACK” or “OUR BEST WORK”. Four-inch letters suit smaller boards, labels for sections and door displays. As a rule of thumb, the title should be readable from the furthest point people will view the board. Measure the board width and divide by the number of letters plus spaces to see whether the full-page or half-page letters will fit.

How many letters fit on a board?

Letter widths vary — W and M are wider, I is narrow — so count spaces as roughly half a letter. For long titles, use two rows or the smaller letters.

Printing and cutting tips

1. Print outline letters on coloured card stock for colour without using ink.
2. Use “Actual size” or “100%” in the print settings so letters stay the same height.
3. Cut just outside the outline for a thin border, or along it for a clean edge.
4. For sturdier letters, mount them on a contrasting card and cut a ½-inch border — the layered look stands out on busy boards.
5. Laminate letters you want to reuse from year to year, then cut them out again.
6. Store letters in labelled envelopes by title so they are ready next year.

Outline letters for colouring

The outline style has thick, clear edges so children can colour, paint or collage the letters themselves. Colour and contrast

Choose letter colours that stand out against the background paper: dark letters on light backgrounds, or white and bright letters on navy, black or deep green. Outlining letters with a contrasting border — or mounting them on a slightly larger card — makes titles readable from further away. Keep to two or three colours per board so the display looks tidy.
